Summary/Abstract: Since the 1960s, the global landscape has been engulfed in a tumultuous fervour of artificially engineered elements, coexisting with the preservation of heritage components derived from the natural realm. As expounded by Scaturro (2008), the mid-twentieth century ushered in an era where technological prowess explicitly commandeered the fashion domain. The present study seeks to delineate parallels between the ascension of synthetic materials and the contemporaneous revolution in eco-sustainable alternatives. It posits that a meticulous examination of the burgeoning popularity of plastics could serve as a harbinger for a foundational metamorphosis within the fashion industry, thereby expediting a shift in attitudes across industries with substantial ecological footprints, as well as among consumers. Exemplary instances include Stella McCartney’s inaugural showcase of garments crafted from mycelium-based leather in a Vogue exposé and Adidas’ visionary projection of a more sustainable future, epitomized by the iconic Stan Smith Mylo shoe – both emblematic of our entry into the era of biomaterials.
