Summary/Abstract: The residence in Gołuchów, including the castle and adjacent green areas, rebuilt by Izabela Działyńska née Czartoryska (1830–1899) with her husband Jan (1829–1880), has been the subject of many studies. The castle houses excellent artistic collections. The most valuable included ancient art (especially the collection of Greek vases) and products of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance (sculptures, objets d’art., graphics). These collections were created based on scientific studies and consultations with specialists. Catalogs were also published (partly) during Izabela Działyńska’s lifetime. Her husband tried to gather a collection of trees and shrubs in the adjacent park. Although awareness of the existence of a tree collection in Gołuchów is quite common, the method of building it has so far remained on the margin of interest of researchers. This article proposes a look at the park adjacent to the castle as a collecting activity, analogous to the one that led to the accumulation of artistic collections. Jan Działyński created its profile (coniferous trees and shrubs, especially those coming from the region being only scientifically described), based on scientific studies and his own findings. As in the case of an artistic collection, he did not strive for a certain perfect completeness, but selected species and specimens taking into account the climatic and soil conditions of the Gołuchów park. Działyński also wanted to employ a professional gardener with competences and research interests, so that his collection would become a research center. The originality of Działyński’s tree collection was not so much its scientific background and ambitions, but a certain complementarity to historical and artistic collections. After giving his art collections to his wife, he focused on expanding his botanical collections. The Gołuchów residence, like a kunstkamera, combined knowledge about the products of nature and man.
