Summary/Abstract: The paper „Tragedy as a subtext of the play Prince Pavle by Slobodan Selenić” explores the subtext of the genre of tragedy in Selenić’s play. The function of the poetic features of the tragedy and the epilogue of the play, which is a quote from Sophocle’s tragedy Trachinian Woman, are analyzed. In addition, Selenić’s play is contextualized with Sophocles, and Prince Pavle’s personality is correlated with Hamlet, Creon and Hill. The main thesis of the play is that the people and the state have no future, if they are not built on the foundations of their own values and if they are forced to live in a community with enemies.
