Summary/Abstract: This year we will mark the 190th anniversary of the birth of the remarkable architect from Switzerland, Italian by origin, Alexander Iosifovich Bernardazzi (1831-1907), famous for the creation of various historical buildings in Ukraine, Bessarabia and even in Poland. This architect completes the galaxy of Bessarabian architects of the first half of the XIX century [1], and a truly new period in Bessarabia begins with his name. Alexander Bernardazzi was “a typical idealist, in the strict sense of the word, if we understand by idealism an unshakable faith in the intrinsic dignity of the human person and in the ultimate triumph of the eternal principles of life such as love, goodness, and beauty”[6]. It was he, a talented architect coming from a family of architects of Italian descent, who was destined to become the author of many buildings and structures in Bessarabia, including elegant palaces, mansions, churches, parks, etc. and whose talent is captured today in architectural monuments, including in our Republic of Moldova.
