Summary/Abstract: Fiesole, a town on the hills above Florence, was one of the twelve Etruscan towns. In the year 62 B.C. it became a Roman colony. Dante Alighieri follows Florentine tradition in believing that the nobles of Florence were descended from the Roman colonists while the common people were originally immigrants from Fiesole, and to this mixture of races (nations we would probably say today) he attributes all the subsequent troubles of Florence.
