Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe to the reader one way of assessing the echoic repertoire of achild with autism spectrum disorder. The decision to focus on this topic is motivated by the nature of echoicimitation, which is one of the strongest prerequisites for the development of expressive language skills. The paper discusses the development of echoic skills and their relationship to the child's subsequent progress in language skills. It then describes the foreign instrument The Early Echoic Skills Assessment (EESA) as part of the Verbal Behaviour Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), which is one of the assessment tools for children with autism spectrum disorder or delayed language development. The review also describes a pilot application of the Slovak version of the test for the assessment of phonetic repertoire and phonotactic structuresin children with autism, which is based on the principles of the EESA. Despite the small number of children in the sample, the proposed test appears to be a reliable tool for diagnosing the phonetic repertoire and phonotactic structures in Slovak children with autism. The comparison of the obtained data did not confirm a significant relationship between the phonetic repertoire and the extent of the active vocabulary. On the contrary, asignificant relationship between phonetic repertoire and speech intelligibility was confirmed.
