Summary/Abstract: It seems that the most prominent interpreters of Plato’s Republic agreed upon that Socrates’ argumentation against Trasymachus is neither satisfying nor convincing. In this paper, I will attempt to point out what is the validity and argumentative power of Socrates’ refutation of the immoralist account of justice. His arguments do not only have the refutative value, but they also provide us with some important general insights into the nature of techne, arête, pleonexia, eudaimonia, etc., as well as with the direction of the further discussion in the Republic.
