Summary/Abstract: The social capital is relatively new concept in social sciences that expresses the ability of the members of a community or groups to function together in order to realize their common aims. The trust and the active engagement in different forms of association are considered the most important elements of social capital. There is more and more research which shows that different forms of social capital are necessary for economic, political and social development of societies, in other words that the distrust and passiveness have high economic, political and social price. As a form of collective self-help, social capital is especially important for undeveloped and poor communities. This paper has the aim to present summarily the findings of up to date research in this field and to point out to some chances which are open to the Islamic community as probably the largest possessor of the social capital in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
