Summary/Abstract: This essay draws on the concepts of profane illumination and the informe to develop a model of the avant-garde in relation to obsolescence and nostalgia. The model is illustrated musically by accounts of two American works, the finale of Charles Ives’s Second Orchestral Set (1915) and John Cage’s Imaginary Landscape No. 4 for twelve radios (1951).
