Summary/Abstract: People make their contact through language and in this way, they can meet their needs for communication. However, the existence of different languages in the world reveals the need for translation, as well. There has always been a need for translation from past to present. It has served as a bridge between communities and civilizations for the sake of communication with each other throughout the history. It has owned an important place in human life. Thanks to cultural exchange, which is the biggest factor in translation, it has ensured the development of nations. Translation is a complex, interdisciplinary. Within this dimension, one of the most preferred fields of translation is literary translation. Literary translation can be completely attibuted as a cultural transmission. While a work written with the source culture in the source language is transferred to the target language and its medium, there would be a cultural transferrance, as well. As seen here; translation is not an easy and mechanical action. Translation criticism is made according to the criteria and at the same time, the translator's decision-making process. In this context, a source text written in English and its target text in Turkish will be analyzed comparingly. The purpose of this analysis is to examine the reason for deviation from the source text while transferring from the source text to the target text. In this article, the cultural elements in the Turkish translation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale will be examined using Mona Baker's translation method.
