Experiences of Religious Education in the Public Education System of Croatia

Summary/Abstract: This paper provides data on the inception of Islamic religious education in Croatian primary and secondary schools and Islamic upbringing in preschool institutions. It also sheds light on the crucial role of Islamic religious education in the integration of Muslim children into Croatian society, which is predominantly Catholic. Furthermore, the paper reflects on the excellent collaboration between the Religious-Educational Service of the Islamic Community Meshihat in Croatia and the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, which is reflected in various fields. In the context of marking 30 years of Islamic religious education in the educational system of the Republic of Croatia, the paper analyzes the retrospective, current state, and future perspectives of Islamic religious education. It also presents achievements during this period, such as the inclusion of textbooks in the Catalog of Textbooks of the Republic of Croatia, the inclusion of competitions in Islamic religious education in the Catalog of Competitions of the Republic of Croatia, and the inclusion of professional development for Islamic religious education teachers in the Catalog of Professional Development of Educational Workers in the Republic of Croatia. The paper discusses collaboration with the Riyaset of the BiH Islamic Community in the field of education and joint projects.
