Summary/Abstract: In the article, I want to show that in those research areas where there is no unifying theory, the models are very often decisive for the interpretation of empirical data and articulation of new problems. This is primarily the case when scientists want to explain the complex phenomena. In the analysis of the hierarchical model of the carcinogenesis I will show how this model enabled scientists to understand cancer as a genuine Darwinian phenomenon.
