Summary/Abstract: The discovery of mirror neurons in macaque monkeys occurred at the beginning of the 90’s in Parma University. These neurons fire when the monkey acts and when the monkey observes the same action performed by another monkey or experimentator. In macaque monkeys, these neurons were active in premotor and parietal cortex. In humans, there is an assumption that mirror neurons are inferior frontal cortex, ventral premotor cortex and in rostral part of the inferior parietal lobus. This article describes the role of mirror neurons in the understanding of the intentions of the behavior of others, imitation and empathy.
