Summary/Abstract: It is not uncommon in 20th century Hungary that individuals and communities have undergone radically different political and moral judgments, and the image formed of them has changed significantly over time. The situation in Sopron after the referendum can be described in a similar way. As the political system changed, the image of the power elite of Sopron and the self-determination of the locals also changed. These were sometimes consistent and sometimes contradictory. A coincidence can be observed in the months following December 1921, when the self-image of the locals and the image of Sopron of the elites governing the country were most similar. In the post-World War II socialist era, remembrance of the Sopron referendum did not fit into the ideological framework of the system. The referendum was forgotten, only surviving on a few channels of private memory. After decades of silence in Hungarian historical memory, the fate of the western Hungarian border region after the First World War was mentioned again. The memory of the referendum in Sopron has become more and more vivid since the 1990s, and signs of remembrance have appeared in several places. At the same time, the political resonance of the historical problem intensified.
