Summary/Abstract: After a brief historiographical summary, the paper presents the impact of the Treaty of Trianon on Catholic Church government in the West-Hungarian region. The change of borders was not immediately followed by an adjustment of the church government to the new political boundaries, because the Holy See was careful in dealing with this delicate issue. Apostolic governorates were established in the annexed territories within a few years. This was the case in Burgenland, which had been preceded by a struggle between the Austrian and Hungarian governments and church leadership. In the end, neither side’s original idea was realised: the Hungarian government could not prevent the ecclesiastical annexation of the territory, while the loss of the referendum in Sopron meant that an independent diocese could not be established in Burgenland. The result was a temporary solution in Burgenland that lasted for several decades.
