Summary/Abstract: One of the basic problems of liberalism is the answer to the question about the status of values. And the thought of one of the most outstanding representatives of the political philosophy of the 20th century, Eric Voegelin, fits into this problem. In response to the question in the history of culture, two basic orientations emerged. One is the position of sophistication which has found its continuation in modern thought; including liberalism. This is the thesis that the individual is the „measure of things”. The second position is the view of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. In this approach, the world of values exists objectively; regardless of man. In the tradition, it is quite widely recognized that sophistry is not a philosophy. Voegelin’s concept is different. The position of sophistry, its view of the place of the individual in society, can be considered a philosophy. It has - just like Plato - in mind the world of objective values. It is, as Voegelin puts it, the idea of „order”.
