Summary/Abstract: The article critically analyses excerpts from Sister Xavier Berkeley SM’s let-ters sent between 1890 and 1901 and published in the booklet – A Sister ofCharity in China. Being a series of letters written to her family – in the UnitedStates of America by the Work for the Propagation of the Faith. As part ofexternal critique, the paper provides a description of the studied source,introduces its author’s biography, and places it in the context of historicalevents. Using its content, the article focuses on the history of the sister’stravels, her attitude to local culture and religiosity. Moreover, it presentshow, in the letters, Sister Berkeley described the realisation of the Vincentiancharism by the Daughters of Charity. The main research result is the clarifica-tion of Sister Berkeley’s understanding of the mission’s purpose.
