Summary/Abstract: Thomas Hobbes states in Leviathan that fear, which is cause for war in the state of nature, is also the means of uniting the citizens of the state. This leaves open the question about the possibility of trust in society, which is part of Hobbes’s definition of covenant, paramount for society, but is opposed to fear. I argue that despite the postulated stubbornness of man’s passions, Hobbes’s teaching on dispositions allows for a certain, albeit limited level of sociability of human nature, which makes it possible to explain trust in society within his political-philosophical system.
