The question of identity and culture memory in Dagestani sketches by Alisa Ganieva

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyze and interpret a series of works by Alisa Ganieva collected under the common title Дагестанские очерки (Dagestani Sketchesб 2010). The starting point for the analysis is the issue of identity in the theory of cultural memory (Assmann). The analysis also takes into account the theoretical assumptions of the genres the author draws from (sketch, essay, memoir) and the role of the oral narrative technique (skaz). The conducted research shows that Ganieva builds her story about Dagestan, by referring to history, culture, and her own experiences, often recalling the history of her family. By demonstrating knowledge about the region, she expresses her views and attitude toward the world. By building a narrative, she becomes a medium of cultural memory, revealing collective and individual identity.
