Summary/Abstract: The existence of slavery in the Byzantine and Constantinopolitan-influenced states is oftenoverlooked, with most attention focused on the slave trade in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Basinin the medieval period. As a first starting point in an attempt to establish the origin of Gypsy slavery inthe Romanian countries I propose an overview of the legal regime of slavery in the Byzantinecivilizational space.
