Summary/Abstract: This article examines the historical and intellectual background of the national and educational teachings of Rabbi Judah Loeb Ben Bezalel, also known as the MaHaRaL of Prague (1525-1609). The author argues that the MaHaRaL's ideas were not detached from his historical reality, but rather influenced by the social, political and religious conditions of his time and place. The author also suggests that the MaHaRaL was in contact with some of his non-Jewish contemporaries, especially the Bohemian Brothers, a Christian sect that shared some of his national and pedagogical views. The author concludes that the MaHaRaL's teachings reflect his unique personal qualities as a systematic thinker and a profound observer of human society and nature.
