Summary/Abstract: This article explores the symbolism of synagogal textiles, especially the curtains and mantles that cover the Torah scrolls. It traces the origins of these textiles to ancient cosmological theories and mythologies, as well as biblical sources and Jewish traditions. It analyzes the meanings of the motifs, colors, and inscriptions that adorn the synagogal textiles, and how they reflect the hopes, beliefs, and values of the Jewish community. It also examines the historical and social contexts of the donors and makers of these textiles, and how they expressed their gratitude, devotion, and identity through their gifts.
