Summary/Abstract: This is a personal narrative of the author's experience in the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, where she and her friend Hanna were liberated by the British army in April 1945. The author describes the horrific conditions of the camp, the chaotic situation after the liberation, and the symbolic image of a bird drinking from a puddle on the hip bone of a dead woman. The author reflects on the meaning of survival, memory, and guilt in the face of the mass atrocities committed by the Nazis.
