Summary/Abstract: This article seeks to answer the question of why Stanisław Moniuszko never composed a grand ballet d’action or a romantic ballet, but rather added scenes to other composers’ works. Another aim is to see how the preserved fragments of Moniuszko’s compositions may be used by contemporary choreographers. To this end, the author has attempted to reconstruct the context in which the composer wrote his ballets and see how they resonated with his contemporaries. The second part of the article constitutes an analysis of choreographic performances of Moniuszko’s ballet music in the latter half of the 20th century and the first two decades of the 21st one. While the research has revealed that the composer did not seem to attract particularly inspiring choreographers, his works, or rather their fragments, may indeed fit innovative theatrical techniques such as remixes, collages or copying.
