Summary/Abstract: In 19th century, as a part of nascent Flemish identity movement in a still predominantly French-speaking Belgium, the Belgian composer Peter Benoit is campaigning for the creation of a Flemish music. The use of common codes should make it possible to specify this new music with a view to raising the self-awareness of the Flemish people. Language, historical and geographical identification, folklore, personnel management and instrumentation are all used to this end. This article reports on this state of affairs by means of the specialist French-language press of the period in question, which bears witness to these Flemish musical practices.
