Summary/Abstract: Considerations on the grammar and semantics of the German verb gedenken[commemorate] lead to a discussion and a typological definition of GEDENKEN as a speech actand to a textlinguistic-rhetorical characterization of the commemorative speech as a subtype of thegenus demonstrativum. After a deductive determination of the text components that, consideringGerman history, are to be expected in a commemorative speech on the anniversary of the end ofWorld War II, an official government statement from 1965 and two presidential commemorativespeeches from 1985 and 1995 are analyzed as examples. The aim is to examine to what extent thesecomponents are reflected in them, how their size and relationship to one another change over timeand which other lexical-semantic means are typical for the design of these texts.
