Comparison of Text Types in Television News. Conceptual considerations in a media cultural linguistic perspective

Summary/Abstract: The relevance of television news is explained by the credibility it enjoys in a number ofcountries. Media cultural linguistics provides the appropriate framework for the specific contributionof linguistic media research. One approach is the analysis of forms of communication and text types,based on a multimodal concept of text. Using the example of different Austrian news programmes onone day, the comparative variables for a contrastive study of television news are explained. Finally, different classifications of text types in TV news are presented and the description of text type pro-files (as related to the categories of repertoire, frequency and networks) is proposed as a significantaim of media cultural linguistic analyses.
