Summary/Abstract: The paper compares and analyses the four texts of Lamentations comprising three Lutheran hymnals: The Perfect Hymnal of Poland [Doskonały Kancjonał Polski] (1673), the Valentine of Brzozów hymnal (1554) and the Piotr Artomiusz’ Toruń hymnal (1620). They are four religion-themed texts describing the Passion of Jesus Christ. The aforementioned four versions of Lamentations are juxtaposed and analysed from the perspective of language, vocabulary, means of poetic expression, stylistic strategies and themes. The structure of individual texts is analysed with apostrophes, complaints, requests and conclusions being described. The lexical field containing words that connote suffering are examined. It is noted that there are no descriptions of Christ’s looks that contrast with the macabre of his body, which is characteristic for the other texts of similar thematic. The medieval motifs of addressing Christ’s body parts and planctus naturae are emphasised. Hyperboles, accumulations, rhetorical questions and Christ’s descriptions are outlined and discussed. Such a comparative analysis displays the changes occurring on multiple layers of the language in the given editions of hymnals that were published in different times.
