Summary/Abstract: The mention of sheep diseases already appeared in the work of Cato the Elder. In the following centuries, Columella and Palladius described the diseases of sheep and goats which they knew. The message of Kassianus Bassus Scholastik is extremely valuable because the set of diseases presented by him looks different than in the case of the subsequent authors later on. The differences in the described diseases may result from both drawing from other sources and from geographical specificity. Kassianus wrote in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, while the older messages primarily referred to Italy. Due to the climatic and geographical differences, some diseases found in the western part of the Empire were not very common in the east and vice versa. Diseases such as scabies or ulcers, the occurrence of which is not geographically determined, have been taken into account by all of the authors.
