Summary/Abstract: Raul Dona is the representative of the Romanian intellectuals who, in the context of the First World War, joined Romania’s military efforts to fulfil the national ideal aiming to achieve Greater Romania. As it results from his memoirs, Raul Dona symbolizes both the position of the military doctor devoted to the health service and of the husband and father willing to protect his family from the difficulties of the war. His diary is a diagnosis of the Romanian society in which the author highlights events of the war as well as of everyday life with its joys and disappointments. Raul Dona’s notes denote disorganization, corruption and lack of collective solidarity regardingthe national ideal. His sharp criticism reveals the distrust in the Romanian administration, in the strategy and alliances assumed by the Romanian political factors which led to the disappointing political and military situation in 1917. A careful observer of those events, the author expresses both the fascination for the time spent by the Romanian society and the dimensions of the sacrifices and deprivations which accompanied this process.
