Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the changes of meaning of the word dieta happening from around the 16th Century to the modernity. The lexeme under review comes from the Greek language (díaita) and currently functions in the majority of the European languages, including Polish. At the beginning, it was an abstract noun expressing the way of doing an activity, but later it started to be used to refer to the object of an activity. The changes of meaning of the lexeme under review are illustrated by entries from old and modern dictionaries of the Polish language. These entries are complemented by Internet texts showing the variety of shades of meaning and contexts in which the lexeme is used nowadays.
