Summary/Abstract: The article outlines revitalisation in Poland in the context of the European cohesion policy, with the stress put on the experiences of the Opole Voivodeship. The goal of the cohesion policy is to reduce social, economic and territorial differences among the E.U. regions. In the 1970s structural funds were introduced, and in the 1990s the Cohesion Fund was founded. Currently, the cohesion policy is the major investment policy in the E.U., with the aim of boosting economic growth, creating new work places, and implementing innovations. In Poland the process of revitalisation encompasses the activities in the fields of complex economic, social, territorial, etc. problems, which are implemented within the specific legal frames and the act of revitalisation. The process of revitalisation is carried on the level of boroughs with the projects amalgamating various aspects, e.g. social, economic, infrastructural, environmental and cultural. The Opole Voivodeship uses the territorial approach to revitalisation that takes into consideration subregions, towns, municipalities and boroughs. Within the years 2014–2020, the Opole Voivodeship completed many revitalisation projects, which significantly helped to improve the quality of life and the development of the areas affected by degradation. In the economic prospect for the years 2021–2027, the revitalisation process in the Opole Voivodeship will be continued based on the allocation of assets for the urban and rural areas, according to the E.U. directives. It additionally includes boroughs in the process of revitalisation.
