Saint Andrei Şaguna and his text book of pastoral study

Summary/Abstract: In the year we celebrate a century and a half since the passing of Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna, this article highlights his last written and printed book, “Manual de studiu pastoral sistematic” (Systematic pastoral study text book) from 1872. This work emerged from the need to rethink contemporary pastoral care in the spirit of the missionary priesthood we are called to in a time with challenges as urgent as those during Metropolitan Şaguna’s era. The text book is Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna’s last major work, published shortly before his death, aiming to provide priests with a text book that takes into account the social, cultural, economic, and legal Romanian realities in which each shepherd of souls operates. It is one of the few books reprinted six years after its release and was a pastoral teaching text book until after 1918 at the Theological Institute in Sibiu.
