What Can Czech Archive Sources Reveal About A Piarist College In Rastatt In 1715–1778

Summary/Abstract: The foundation of the Piarist College in Rastatt can be best observed in the sources from Piarist College Archive of Ostrov nad Ohří, housed at National Archives in the archive of Piarist Order, although they do not mention the year of the foundation in 1715. The Piarist College Chronicle in Ostrov nad Ohří contains notes on continuation from 1716 in the second volume. The most important source are the lists of Piarist Order members with their functions in respective colleges as they were assigned by the Provincial Superior. These lists are housed at Moravian Land Archives in Brno for the years 1715-1724 (archive G 10, No. 577) and at National Archives (Piarist Order Archive, Book No. 27) for the years 1725-1762 and they served as sources for tables. The Piarist College in Rastatt was renewed in 1736. The perspective of its development was linked to efforts of Piarist General Superior P. Johann Felix Arduini a Presentatione B. M. V. to promote the Order in Europe in the context of the foundation activities from 1736-1742. A short chronicle note about the restoration of Piarist House and later Piarist College in Rastatt can be found in the Piarist College Chronicle from Ostrov nad Ohří and in the sources pertaining to the history of the Piarist Order Province such as the lists of Piarist Order members and their functions. The protocols on General Chapters of Piarist Order in Rome contain Order members that were active in the Rastatt College and the protocols on General Chapter from 1766 contain an instruction for Rhine-Swabian Piarist Vice-province (est. 1762). The information on establishment of the Rhine-Swabian Piarist Vice-province at the beginning of 1760s can be obtained from Czech-Moravian Piarist Province Chronicle kept by P. Guido Neichte ab Angelis from 1758.
