Summary/Abstract: The ethno-statistical results of the census of the population and the residential fund have been analyzed as a form and way of arranging and reconstruction of the identity of different communities and groups in the territory of Bulgaria during the past 125 years. Ethnicity determining indicators have been discussed as a kind of a network and a matrix whereby a certain population has been mapped. The challenging and the analysis of the formally established ethno-statistical categories is an approach, ethnological in its character, to the results of the population census and the state sanctioned demographic interpretations. In this article, the attention has been focused on the category of “maternal/mother/spoken tongue”. In a specific archaeology of ethno-statistics, the development of the analysis begins with the presentation of this category for the 1881 -2001 period and passes through the debates of its specificities in the respective statistical layers, produced by the different population censuses. The drafted tables can serve for other most varied investigations in future.
