Summary/Abstract: The Biographical Dictionary of Vistula Pomerania, published in 1992–2012, gained the reputation of a showcase of the Gdańsk Scientific Society. Its roots lie in the biographical volumes published in the 1970s by GTN in the “Gdańsk Pomerania” series. The Editorial Committee of this series has been operating for many years under the leadership of prof. Stanisław Gierszewski (1929–1993). In 1981, on behalf of that Committee, as its next chairman, I submitted to the GTN Board a project to prepare and publish a four‐volume SBPN. At that time, the Gdańsk‐ ‐Toruń Editorial Committee with prof. S. Gierszewski at the head. The Committee developed the concept of the work and gathered a group of authors mainly from the scientific community of Toruń and Gdańsk. After 10 years of efforts, in 1992, vol. 1 was published, containing 567 entries with the letters A–F. Its co‐publisher was the University of Gdańsk. The next 3 volumes, containing 636, 547, 537 entries, were published in 1994–1997, edited by prof. Zbigniew Nowak. He also edited two volumes of the Supplement, published in 1998 and 2002, covering 395 and 333 entries. In 2012, volume III of the Supplement was published, edited by J. Borzyszkowski. It contains over 230 biographies and the Entry Index of the entire work, compiled by Danuta Beger and Hanna Kościelecka. A considerable problem for GTN was the financial side of this work. It was published by the efforts and effort of GTN and the University of Gdańsk with the support of the Scientific Research Committee, the Voivodeship Office in Gdańsk, as well as the Office of the Pomeranian Marshal, the Municipal Office in Gdańsk, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Gdańsk University of Technology. The third volume of the Supplement was published with the announcement of the possibility of continuing the project. It is assumed that SBPN is not only a showcase of GTN’s publishing achievements, but also a great monument to the word – a picture of the pantheon of outstanding Pomeranians from the Middle Ages to modern times.
