Summary/Abstract: Th is article analyzes the symbolic construction of the agro-lunar myth in El mercurio (1968) and El río de la luna (1981), by José María Guelbenzu, in light of the mythical-symbolic concepts of Jung, Bachelard and Durand. Th e hypothesis holds that the poetics in both novels is structured by the symbols of this mythical archetype, that is, the moon and the serpent. To demonstrate this, the fi rst one will be analyzed in relation to the feminine, temporal and fatal aspects, while the second will be examined in the context of cyclical temporality and evil. Th e conclusion is that the agro-lunar myth is contextualized within the contemporary setting of these novels, creating a relationship between history and myth. Th is interplay renders both narratives appreciable for their symbolic richness.
