Summary/Abstract: Geographer and traveller Jiří Viktor Daneš (1880–1928) is considered nowadays to be one of the founders of the Czech geography and geomorphology. Pursuing his scientific interests, he made frequent journeys in his homeland and in Europe as well as five journeys outside Europe. During his travelling he engaged himself in photographing, the pictures he made were used for lectures and for publishing purposes. Daneš’ vast photographic legacy was aft er his death gradually divided among several institutions, especially Masaryk Institute and Archives of Czech Academy of Sciences, National Museum – the Náprstek Museum and Sládeček Museum of History and Nature in Kladno. The paper is focused on the detailed analysis of 121 negatives, 139 slides and 38 photographs housed in the photographic collection of the Náprstek Museum. During their processing, an emphasis was put on the order in making a photographic image according to the procedures suggested by Filip Wittlich. As a starting point, original negatives were chosen that were separated from the negatives – reproductions. They were subsequently used for comparing and sorting of slides and photographs. The attention was focused on both exterior signs (i. e. material, format and material type) and interior signs – the image captured.
