Summary/Abstract: In the article, the author analyzes the way socially excluded groups are represented in Piotr Łazarkiewicz's film Pora na Czarownice (1993). When creating the first Polish full-length production touching on the domestic context of the AIDS problem, the director declared his desire to create a socially engaged work. On the one hand, the idea was to show the harsh reality of the period of political transformation, contrary to the escapist tendencies of Polish cinema at that time. On the other hand, the aim of the film was to speak out in defense of HIV-infected people and condemn intolerance. By symbolically valuing one group, the creator seems to be blind to the compensatory stigmatization of the folk class. The phenomenon is described in the text by analyzing the way otherness is constructed in film and by referring to the context of its reception in the Polish press in the first half of the 1990s.
