Summary/Abstract: The polysemy of the interpretation of the literary text represents a distinguishing criterion of the modernism. A language adapted to the modernist realities, concentrating a series of significances in a symbol will account for the plurality of the text, which will lead to a new way of relating between the reader and the literary work. Umberto Eco, an outstanding figure on the contemporary literary scene, a prolix novelist and a highly active literary researcher and semiotician, offers a conclusive perspective – from inside – upon the plurality of meaning in the artistic creations and upon the role of the reader in the completion of the ‘open works’.
