Summary/Abstract: One of the oldest Piarist Colleges in Bohemia was the one in Ostrov nad Ohří (Schlackenwerth). It was the third foundation and the first college that worked in a region with mostly German-speaking population. In total, it was the seventh house founded by Piarists in the Central European province Germania, the foundation took place in 1666. After the successful foundation, the history of college in its first stage (up to 1778) can be divided into three periods, the first being the history of the Piarist House in the 17th century, the next touches upon the working of the school in the first half of the 18th century, and the third period falls into the latter half of the same century with the school reforms of the Austrian ruler Maria Theresia when the grammar classes in Ostrov were disbanded and only the elementary classes were kept in the form of the reformed main school. The study of the two time periods of the Piarist College in Ostrov in the latter half of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century shows its major importance for the Krušné Hory Region. The college filled the gap in the grammar schools network in a relatively densely populated border region of Bohemia. It could follow up to the past traditions of the local education facilities, both in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) and in Jáchymov (Joachimsthal). For many inhabitants of the region, the school opened the possibility of the journey aft er education to distant, culturally well-developped regions such as the one in Mikulov, which stood in close relation to the Ostrov Piarist House. Some Piarists from Ostrov became the rectors of the Piarist College in Mikulov. Some of the Ostrov rectors were assistants to the Mikulov provincials. The foundation of the college in Ostrov was also meant as a support base for the further promotion of Piarists Colleges. Although this did not apply fully for the attempts in founding the Piarist College in Prague, it opened the way, through the foundation of College in Rastatt, to promote the Piarist Colleges in Western Europe.
