Summary/Abstract: During the years of the First World War, several Romanian newspapers from Transylvania were banned by the Hungarian government. It was in these circumstances that towards the beginning of 1918, three young professors from Sibiu founded the weekly newspaper “Gazeta Poporului” (The People’s Newspaper), which was meant for peasants, craftsmen and soldiers. Silviu Dragomir, Nicolae Bălan and Ioan Broşu aimed to write in a language easily understandable by the common men, which were the target of these “people’s papers”, a very specific type of newspapers characteristic for Transylvania. The subject of “Gazeta Poporului” (The People’s Newspaper) has been dealt with in several studies and synthesis papers. However, its monographic presentation does not exist as such and it is therefore the topic of the current paper. The three founding editors, the manifesto, the subjects of the articles, the notes, the pieces of news that came out in the newspaper between 1918 and 1920 are all presented in our paper. We highlight the important role that the weekly newspaper played in maintaining the trust of the readers in the times of political change from the end of the war, and especially in achieving Transylvania’s union with Romania. The publication of “Gazeta Poporului” (The People’s Newspaper) was put to an end in September 1920, once it has accomplished its mission to prepare the Union and after it has described the early beginnings of the consolidation of the brand new Romanian state, which encompassed almost all the Romanians. At the same time, the founders started their activity in other fields: Silviu Dragomir became an university professor in Cluj, Nicolae Bălan was elected bishop of Transylvania and Ioan Broşu joined the diplomacy.
