Summary/Abstract: The cracking down of the 1848 Revolution resulted in the absolutist rule being established in Transylvania and deeply affecting culture as well. The hardships mobilized the Romanian scholars to assert even more assiduously their national spirituality, in answering the call for militant actions that the 1848 Blaj Proclamation called for. Unfavorable circumstances would ill-affect the development of Romanian theatre on this side of the Carpathians, though without being able to discourage the intelligentsia of the time. Brasov, Oradea, Cluj, Gherla, Sibiu are but several of the Transylvanian cities that would have their own amateur theatre companies, for whom cultural and linguistic exchanges with the Romanians across the Carpathians was crucial. Transylvanian media would keep strong the readers’ interest in theatre, in such a socially efficient art, as well as to stimulate the holding of theatrical performances in Transylvania. The major support for the Transylvanian Romanian community’s efforts to preserve and assert its national identity would be offered by two publications – Gazeta Transilvaniei, in Brasov, and Telegraful roman, in Sibiu.
