Summary/Abstract: In this article we want to point out how the friendship between Eliade and Cioran evolved from their youth, when they lived in Romania, to the moment when Eliade was a professor in Chicago. In Bucharest, they were students of the famous professor Nae Ionescu, and they published a lot in the newspapers of that time. The friendship between them became stronger and stronger during the time they lived in Paris and until Eliade’s death. We followed both Eliade’s autobiographical writings, Cioran’s essays, their letters to each other or the critical commentaries the two of them wrote when one of them published a new book. They had been writing letters to each other since Cioran was in Berlin with a scholarship up to the years when Eliade lived in America. Both of them became famous in Paris at about the same time. The letters are very illustrative of their friendship. These letters prove how intense and genuine their friendship was. Each letter tells us something about their way of thinking and about the profoundness of their friendship.
