Summary/Abstract: Individual assassinations or court coups were a frequent occurrence in the Balkan countries in the 19th century. However, the preservation and improvement of the status of the immediate perpetrators of the murders was not so common. Russian diplomacy stated that it was an unfortunate set of circumstances and the result of internal Serbian dissatisfaction, while the Austrian attitude towards the coup d’état was favourable. The prominence of the Karađorđević dynasty in the first instance did not come from the Russian but from the Austrian side. This is evidenced by two lapidary notes that were officially sent to Saint Petersburg by Russian diplomats from Vienna and Belgrade on May 29, 1903.
