Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the question of the relationship between political development in Slovakia and religious conditions. It focuses in particular on the position of the Catholic Church and its reactions to the number of repressive interventions (nationalisation of education and boarding schools, efforts to establish an independent party for the Catholics, mass pilgrimages). It traces the strategy of the communist authorities towards the Catholic Church, based on the thesis of its compromise during the Slovak Republic period of 1945–1948. It evaluates the importance of the Catholic activists in the victory of the Democratic Party in the 1946 parliamentary elections in Slovakia.
