Summary/Abstract: Rational argumentation both in everyday life and in mathematics education makes an important part of education and communication. When making arguments, it is essential to find proper arguments leading to convince the others of the truth of the drawn conclusions, and/or of the accuracy of the proposed method of problem solving. The contribution presents various views on arguments presented by a range of authors. On the one hand, there is the evidence representing the way of formal argumentation in mathematics, on the other hand, there are less formal arguments to be applied in mathematics at schools, predominantly at elementary schools. The second part of the contribution analyses the results of pedagogical tests aimed at qualifying argumentative skills in the process of solving tasks comprising probability in pupils of year 9 at elementary schools. By choosing the test tasks, we got inspired mainly by the Lawson Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning along with the tasks taken from the PISA international testing. We focused our attention on the ability of pupils to use problem solving reasoning.
