Summary/Abstract: The study delves into the origin of the Spanish interjective expression diga (lit. ‘please speak’), with the formal variant dígame (lit. ‘please speak to me’), highly conventionalized, used in the Spanish spoken in Spain in response to a phone call. Through the electronic corpus CORDE and CREA the author tries to find both the linguistic and extralinguistic reasons that led to its sudden pragmaticalization.
