Summary/Abstract: The text proposes an exegesis of the biblical fragment from the book of Exodus, chapter 32, where we find the story of the Jews making a golden calf while the prophet Moses was on Mount Sinai to receive the Tablets of the Law, a calf that the Jews worshipped. The idolatrous episode is analyzed in detail, and its meanings are put in relation to our religiosity. The episode of the golden calf is full of themes and meanings (God’s relationship with Moses, Moses’ relationship with the holy people, Aaron’s situation and motives, the symbolism of the calf, the actual technique of execution and destruction of the idol, the punishment applied to the idolaters through the Levites etc.). A single thread is detached from this entanglement, in order to link the biblical tale with the story of the present days, thus confirming its relevance. The purpose of this study is to find out whether and how the golden calf can be used today as a valid metaphor capable of guiding us in relation to our world, as other biblical episodes still do, even if more or less vaguely.
