Summary/Abstract: Since the early 1990s, the Czech Language has significantly increased its functional value in South Bohemia. Recent research carried out by the Department of Czech Studies in South Bohemian schools has shown that pupils coming from immigrant families are communicating increasingly in Czech. This use of Czech as a common language is particularly important where several ethnic groups are represented in the same school. Our language is clearly acquiring a multicultural function in communication. However, this also highlights the need for new goals for our educational system: to guarantee a quality education for non-homogeneous student populations which recognize both linguistic and demographic diversity.
